There is certainly a rationale for letting people proceed at their own pace, and with no immediate demands of utility.......

But on the other hand, worthy things probably come out of that pressure, and, imo, it isn't
doing anyone any harm.

Not directly, perhaps, but it's diverting money and talent that could, IMO, be put to better societal use.
