It was never permanent, jcky. Israel tried to give the land back after 1967 and was rejected. Then they tried to negotiate giving most of the land back under Oslo. I agree that Israel has made many mistakes in their handling of things, but you can hardly look at the Oslo Accords and say that the disputed territories (more accurate than "occupied" because there is no existing country that they belong to) are under "permanent" military occupation.
