One cannot do everything, and some kids might be beyond reaching. But there is no way to tell without trying.

Our schools are failing students whose interests are other than traditional academics.

Our local public school, for example, has passed a goal that 70% of all students will take at least one AP course. They pay extra to teachers who teach AP classes, even though those teachers are getting the best students, smaller classes, and shorter work years (those classes quit when the AP exams are taken in mid-May). Meanwhile, the school is cutting back its shop and art offerings. Those are frills, and students who want to take those classes are not seen as serious students.

For all that schools claim to understand and teach to multiple intelligences, they don't.

Teachers get into teaching for the most part because they are verbally intelligent. So they see that as the most valuable intelligence, and strive to create students in their mold (obviously, since in their minds they are successful adults who should be emulated). Many are, indeed, very successful adults, but they fail to recognize, IMO, that there are many measures of success, and students should not be shuttled just into the one teachers have found.

The kid apparently had a lot between his ears, but didn't have the interest or ability to get it out in that school environment. It sounds like it was a rural area. I would have expected animal husbandry and horticulture or the 4H club to be available.
