I had little patience for sitting in class being yammered at, and got only mediocre, at best, grades. But when I decided to get involved in something, I was involved all the way, and usually turned out very high level work.

I was the despair of those teachers who just wanted me to fit in and do what they wanted me to.

There were no computers in those days, but yes, I was an excellent chess player, captain of the school chess team. I loved chess in part because it was mano-a-mano. You weren't relying on anybody but yourself, and in fact you were totally alone out there on the floor. Ultimate freedom, ultimate responsibility.
