How did you know that that Thoreau quote has always been a favorite of mine? Another, even more favorite, quote of mine, probably because I was a performance dancer in English and Scottish country dance and morris and sword dancing, is: Those who dance are thought mad by those who hear not the music.

That's a troubling story. I hope the parents can be both objective about their daughter's needs, and yet strong enough to stand up to the "experts" if necessary. We found that very hard to do when ours would run crosswise to the system. It's so easy to feel intimidated, and you are so frightened that something really might not be NORMAL. Now, years later, I can be grateful mine weren't normal- at least the kind of normal that was seen as desirable by schools. Our boys march to very different drummers- I think one actually is listening to a Mongolian Throat Singer, and the other swaying to a Javanese Gamelan orchestra.
