i bet that number is way low. most people who are "into" antivirus protection are also educated as to the inherent dangers of doing what you've said.

the people i know who have been discovering their machine has a virus are people like you, "free au natural", and infected.

the major difference i see is that you are quite aware of the dangers, whereas i'm talking to people who either didn't want to know about viruses, or they somehow never learned about the problem.

and that's the biggest group of infected people, imo... unprotected and unaware.

followed closely by under-protected who think they are fine. an example of that would be folks who install av software then never update it or run scans.

i haven't encountered too many guys like you, who look forward to getting a virus so you can fix it.
