Unfortunately these days it's very hard to figure out whether the dog is wagging the tail or the tail is wagging the dog as systematic risk is ever-so prevalent. A combined portfolio of shorts and longs is always the best way to go. A good investor should be able to generate significant alpha, I know I do and I ain't that great.
