Dan3,

Re: "Elmer is an idiot for all his talk about yields at Dresden being poor - unless
Elmer were totally wrong, we'd have seen a launch of multiple speeds of Thoroughbred,
instead of a launch limited to the new speed grade."

Could it be that you're the "idiot", Dan3 ?? ... If yields were good,
AMD would be supplying all the speed grades because they would be
"swimming" in excess die. If the yield is poor, then AMD would only
supply the highest speed grade to maximize ASPs.

Make It So,
Yousef

Dan,

Your post brings up a possible explanation for no Tbreds under 2200. AMD just warned and part of the warning implies lower CPU unit shipments. Probably by somewhere between 1M and 2M units. So at this stage of the game, AMD expected to be in a position of Palomino virtually sold out, and Tbreds replacing them. But Palominos are still not sold out, so the plan seems to be to withhold Tbreds from the market until corresponding Palomino parts are sold out.

On heatsink attachment and smaller die, chips below 2200, those running at lower voltages, have lower power consumption, which partially offsets the smaller contact area.

Dan,

On the possibility of poor yields, that Elmer mentioned, we are yet to test the limit of AMD's production capacity, and with the current warning, it is unlikely to happen this quarter. When (or if) we hit the limit, and there are shortages of AMD microprocessors, we can say that there is something to Elmer's hypothesis, but right now, it is just a hypothesis, without supporting evidence.

Dan3- prove that Elmer is an idiot

That does sound like a personal insult, I thought we didn't do that here??
