also, a lot of legitimate businesses ask for your ssn and it isn't necessary that you provide it.

a few days ago i went into the city water department to temporarily put the water bill on a rental house back in my name, until a new tenant moves in.

the clerk brings up my name on her computer, then asks for my ssn. i said, no, i don't need to give you that. she said, well, how about your driver's license number then? i said ok and gave her that number.

i think crooks can do more damage (identity theft-wise) with a ssn than with a dl#.

point being, too many people are asking for your ssn, and in a great many instances, you don't have to give it.

:)
