Oh, I can respond to this response, Dennis. The other was simply too short.

I think we are talking past one another. If I understand what concerns you is that the only ones to profit from this are Hamas, et al. My point is that whoever profits, the present policies of the Sharon government, whatever else they may accomplish, generate more Palestinians willing to go the suicide bombing route and wider sympathy for them among the general population.

As for the Algerian comparison, I agree with your points. However, Judt's point was that the French finally had to leave, though their policies grew more harsh over the years. As I read his article, he's assuming the Israeli's will continue occupying the West Bank until the pain is too great. Then some sort of settlement will follow. An awful lot of needless dying will go on before that happens, however; if Judt is correct.

As for the notion of "defeat", I assumed the Israelis wished to have security not victory.
