Wall Street had expected Qualcomm to report earnings of 22 cents a share in the third quarter, according to analysts surveyed by Thomson/First Call. The company will issue its earnings next month.

Qualcomm also said it expects to meet or exceed its previous prediction of shipments of 16 million phone chip segments. Qualcomm also said orders are strong for the fourth quarter.

In April, Qualcomm reported that earnings fell 60 percent to $43.9 million or 5 cents per share in the first three months of the year compared to the same period a year ago.
