I recall seeing on TV many, many years ago a show that interviewed convicted muggers where the muggers described what they looked for in a victim. I don't recall most of them but one was women who take small steps rather than long strides. My stride was already longish, but I made sure to keep it that way and extend it further. I incorporated in my own personal habits all of what I learned that day. Seems to me that we can get lots of useful information, insights, understanding from criminals if we study them and we should get whatever we can from them as a partial payback for their crimes. And it could be redemptive for the convict as well.

You and I have discussed this before. I don't mind if victims demand retribution even though I personally don't have a taste for it, only that the basis for our penalty scheme ought not to assume that as a basis. It should include some more useful elements. Life imprisonment and death are both useful in that they separate them from us. I don't know what is useful about serving five years. That doesn't solve the problem and may create additional ones. I'd like to see the whole system evaluated on the criterion of constructiveness.
