I shall 'splain: It's not really name dropping if you see a cultural icon, particularly if it's a very minor one, across the street, say, or in an elevator, though it's funny (well, David Letterman's writers think it's funny, and I just did briefly enough to play it) to call that a Brush With Greatness. But you are excused. After I'd lived in Africa for five years I no longer got many of the cartoons in the NYer. But you may run culturally baffling phenomena by us here and we will enlighten you, oh benighted one.

N and I were waiting for an elevator in a hotel and an elderly gentleman appeared and got on the elevator with us. I thought I knew the man, and said so, introducing myself and asking his name and how we were acquainted. He replied very haughtily indeed, "I am Hume Cronyn," and looked straight ahead, clearly miffed.
