Pogrom of Pundits
Depiction of Alaska and California in the context of Kashmir is an analogy and an allegory, taking into consideration that much water passed under the bridge since the day of accession. They are mere comparisons from the point of view of the effect of time over events: Mexicans are not asking for a return of California; the Russians are not asking for the return of Alaska. Much has changed in Kashmir; the pundits have been dislocated, displaced, terrorized, killed and driven to camps. Under these circumstances a plebiscite has no meaning; it is like asking for a vote with a gun to the head. Why is it that the Pundits are men of peace and live in camps and the Jihadists are running amok? They are one and the same people--Hindus-- before the arrival of muslims in the Kashmir valley. Why is it that the Hindu-turned muslim Kashmiris have so much animosity against the pundits, while Pundits live in squalor in the camps? If the Kashmiri muslims attain their objective of independent Kashmir, there will be a pogrom of pundits. Indian Govt. was sagacious enough to keep the Kashmiri culture pristine by not allowing Indians to migrate into Kashmir. The Al Qaeda and the Taliban had no business in Kashmir and they were the ones under the patronage of Pakis military were wrecking havoc on the Kashmiris.

Pakistan has a sibling rivalry with the bigger brother who made it in this world. Laugh if you must. Pakistan has this systemic hatred and jealousy of India for many reasons: the Eastern wing was clipped with the help of Indians; Pakistan was miserably vanquished at every war with India; India is a polyglot, cacophonic, multiracial, multi-religious and caste-ridden democracy under trying circumstances; India's visibility in its educational institutions, the contributions of Indian diaspora the world over, Hinduism's aversion for terrorizing other nations and people, and India's ancient culture are an eyesore for the pakis. There is no paki culture to talk about--except a killing culture and oligarchy--, if it is not a for Hindu culture. The muslims brought violence to the subcontinent: that is their biggest contribution. Perversely some feel pride in that.

Democracy and Islam: Are they compatible? A religion has to have the flexibility to change with the times. Rigidity, terminal hatred of infidels, violence as the next best alternative for settling disputes, honor killings, a systemic hatred of Jews, Hindus and Christians are a few things that need to addressed and changed, if the Islam wants to step into the new millennium.
