What is interesting about the NYSE Short Interest numbers is that of the about 500,000 increase in shorts, 300,000 of the increase resulted due to 2 stocks, Nortel and Lucent.

Of course these increases probably resulted primarily from the issue of convertibles from these companies.

I think that headline Short-Selling Sets a Record Pace On NYSE After Dip Last Month is very misleading.

The Nasdaq number is going to be very interesting...expecting to see a decline in short interest on that exchange.

It seems that 300 MM of these additional shares are just in two issues, NT and LU, both involved in arbitrage games (the shorters own the converts and are in no danger of being squeezed out...).
