The Michigan High School Soccer Association has had this two whistle system for a while, especially for JV games when it is hard to get 3 refs to make it. We ALL hate it! I hope it never ever happens! Trying to be responsible for off sides and the game flow is just downright impossible and if you guys think you are seeing bad officiating right now, well, let me tell you, you don't know what bad officiating is!<g> Case closed. We refs are people just like you, we had our good days and our bad days. We are not professional refs, we do this for the love of the game mostly (and I do it to help me keep my belly size lower!<g>). It is a VERY hard job...Actually, I find the linesman job as more difficult than the Center Ref...making the offside call, watching if the ball crosses the goal line and keeping an eye on the flow of the game and the players is very very hard...You combine that with the fact that all of them get transplanted in a foreign land with severe time differences and the heartfelt desire to do a great job because, hey you are in the WC, is causing for some bad days for a few refs. Hey, it happens to all of us, we are far from perfect. The ones who make the World Cup, for the most part, are the best refs in the world...(hard to believe, but it is true)...To get there these guys must put in an unbelievable number of games in first before they get chosen to this level...And they all get evaluated, not in public of course, but rest assured that some of these guys will never ever ref again in another World Cup. Tough call on Spain on that disallowed goal because the ball appears to be in play and not over the line as the linesman indicated...hey, he thought the ball was over, he made the call, the game goes on. No room for Italian like whining...over the years the Italians and the Spaniards have gotten their share of calls in their favor... So, don't crucify the refs please. We are the true heroes in this game<g>, we take all the abuse while all we do is try our hardest to call a fair game and then go home in anonymity after the game is over...On the other hand, you wouuld not believe what kind of things come out of our soccer moms' mouths...then again, without them we would never have our USA team in the WC quarterfinals<g> So, cheer up everybody, we are down to the Final Four, enjoy the games... I want Brazil and S. Korea golazo fest in the final
