Here is what I do. I have two accounts that allow me to buy and sell Canadians online. I buy and sell the US over the counter symbols of any Canadian I want. Trading Direct (U.S. Clearing Corp) charges me 9.95 regardless of whether it is limit, stop limit, stop or market order. Ameritrade charges me 8.95 for market orders and adds $5 for limit orders.

I don't keep my money in Canadian at the brokerage house. I have opened a local bank account in Canadian Funds, and fund my brokerage accounts from there instead. You have to ask around for this. Only the bigger banks in my city offered it.(Minneapolis) There was no charge for this service.

Capital gains are a USA citizen rate regardless of what you nations' equities I've ever invested in. Sometimes I play the Australian penny stocks. Even if you have a Canadian account which I did for many years they sent those type statements to the IRS here in the USA. I found out the hard way.

Real time quotes for all Canadian stocks on their home exchanges are a free perk offered at both brokerages I use above on an individual symbol before I place a trade basis. I haven't found any streaming quotes for Canadians that are free. Yahoo's delayed quotes are good enough for me but might not work out for you.
