I mean, terrorism is so obviously more like political activism than like crime that I was amazed they started from that point.

Hmmm... that depends TB... Narco-terrorism IS about crime. Terrorizing the political establishment to the extent that they are able to seize political control and corrupt the government to the point where they can continue their criminal enterprizes unchecked.

And organized crime is about power and money. People don't engage in organized crime merely for the sake of being criminals. They do it because, if they don't get caught and convicted, there is profit and power at the end of the road. And that often translates to political power.

Now there is one other element which political and organized criminal terrorism share... That is the motivation and willingness to terrorize anyone who opposes their will within the society they operate. The Colombians practice this by killing the families of judges and politicians who oppose them. Terrorists practice the same methodology in order to assure "loyalty through fear".

And political terrorists require money and logistical support, as well as the means to move it around the world to where they need it. And they accomplish this through intimidation, threats, and fear. Oppose them (such as Palestinian "collaborators" with Israel), and you and your families will be eliminated. Support them.. and you will be rewarded.

That IS how Terrorism compares to organized crime.
