And DVDs are cheaper to manufacture and distribute, with a longer and more durable shelf-life than VCRs... the compact packaging contributes to the new mail-order model which is cheaper for consumers ($20/mo netflix, cheaper if you rent more than 3 movies/mo from blockbuster)... I was thinking DVDs were deflationary.

Another reason circuit city and others are pushing DVDs is also to lower their logistics costs.
