UK workers 'suffer insecurity over their jobs'

Research has found the UK is near the bottom of a world league for job security.

The survey, covering 24 countries, shows workers are more insecure about their jobs than everywhere else except South Korea.

The findings come in data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Around 46% of Korean workers were found to be unsure of their jobs, even if they are performing well, compared with 41% in the UK.

For Japan the figure is 38%, for the US, Australia and France 37%, in Norway 17% and in Denmark 20%.

The TUC says the research shows that domestic factors such as the economic cycle and employment regulation play a bigger role in job security than globalisation.

TUC general secretary John Monks says the report "exploded myths" about globalisation.

"One myth is that it makes jobs insecure in developed countries, or that insecurity is a price that must be paid for economic growth.

"There are big differences between comparable countries, and this can only be due to differences in employment rights, culture and comparative economic performance."
