Think TVA and electification. Sometimes government funds are needed in these cases. After all this too relates to national defense. mike

The fact that oil shale will be tapped when it makes economic sense is not conventional thinking. It is a law of human behavior. We poured a lot of tax money down that rat hole once before (violating that law). It left me poorer and someone else richer. It is ever thus. The private economy tends to fund that which makes economic sense, the public economy tends to fund for votes, kick-backs and other political purposes.

Mike, yes, it makes economic sense to get going even if it's little at a time. We have all the alternative sources of power that can be tapped. Here in the USA, we have aside from Shale oil you mentioned Natural Gas (1/3 the cost of oil), Methane Gas from wastes, Biomass, Geothermal, Solar, Wave, Wind and many others. Each country have its own sources of power. Like the Philippines, Wind power alone would take care 7 times its present power needs.

The biggest problem in weaning us from the use of Oil as the dominant source of power is the enormous cost of replacing the Oil fired generators of Electricity by generators being fired using alternative sources of power. What we are doing now and should continue to do so at a stepped up rate is to replace those aging Oil gererators.

Here is a site I found very informational. Click on the countries in the map you like to learn about their power needs and what sources they have and what they lack: ---
