Evolutionary theory was somewhat stagnant for 100 years. The fierce efforts to defend Charles Darwin's Origin of Species meant that updates and modifications were not made, or were not circulated. Stephen Jay Gould, who passed away this year, deserves much of the credit for adjusting the sometimes forced explanations of Darwin in light of new evidence for Continental drift, the age of the Earth, asteroids, genes, and new fossils. The pace of discovery is now approaching other sciences.
