We do not do these things precisely because they offend our sense of justice.

Offending or not offending our sense of justice is not a rationale, it's a feel-good, a feel-good based on tradition. We have the sense of justice we have because we were raised in that scheme of things. If we were raised in a different scheme of things, we would have a different sense of justice. It's meaningless to talk about our sense of justice. I prefer setting objectives and then figuring out how best to meet them.

I didn't mean "utilitarian" in the sense of the defined philosophy by that name. I guess I should have realized that you would interpret it that way. What I meant was objective oriented, practical, useful, sensible--something that solves the problem.
