Various notions are interconnected. We cannot live in a society where there is no buck stopping: people have to be held responsible for their acts, with attention to mitigating and aggravating factors, and with some mercy. I am not so much looking to put more people away (I am not averse to alternative sentencing for some crimes, for example) as I am in upholding the idea that the primary purpose of sanctions is to punish. When I say that my end is a just society, I do not mean one that punishes everyone, I mean one where there is little to be punished for, that is, a society that is well- ordered. I want parents to discharge their duties to their children with some affection; I want neighbors to count on neighbors in time of emergency; I want schools that are determined not to graduate illiterates, and city administrations that make sure that essential services are performed in a timely manner. I want people to take responsibility, and stop letting others down........
