According to the Velux site (velux-america.com) it looks if you got an absolute top of the line, all the bells and whistles and gadgetry skylight, with a real blockout panel for true darkness capability rather than SPD "blue for night" darkness, you might be able to run the cost up to the $1390 the 24x36 SPD skylight costs. Of course from Velux you'd be getting a rather larger window, more like 45x46.

For a basic skylight, roughly comparable in size to the 24x36, looks like about $150. Venetian blinds (by no means the cheapest shading option) would add another $85, or $200 if you wanted to get fancy and control them electronically.
