Bush’s overall job performance rating continues to receive strong support among U.S. likely voters, latest Zogby America results reveal. The poll, conducted June 17-19 of 1008 likely voters nationwide shows voters giving Bush a 69% positive, 28% negative job performance rating. In May, voters gave Bush a 70% positive, 30% negative job performance rating, and a 69% positive, 30% negative rating in April. The latest rating still represents a low in job performance for Bush since the September 11th terrorist attacks. In February, voters gave Bush a 74% positive, 25% negative rating. The week before the attacks, voters gave Bush 50% positive, 49% negative job performance rating. Bush re-election? Results also show a majority of voters (51%) says President Bush deserves to be re-elected for another term in 2004. In contrast, 28% say it is time for a new president, and another 20% are not sure. Republicans are staunch supporters of Bush deserving re-election (86% re-elect, 4% someone new) compared to Independents (42% re-elect, 27% someone new, 32% not sure) and Democrats (27% re-elect, 51% someone new, 22% not sure). No Time for Campaigning? A plurality of likely voters (48%) believe President Bush should curtail his time and effort spent in campaigning for other Republican candidates while the nation tries to focus on preventing further terrorist attacks. In contrast, 27% believe the President should continue as normal his campaigning for other GOP candidates. Another 15% are not sure. Democrats (30% campaign normally, 54% curtail campaigning) and Independents (24% campaign normally, 60% curtail campaigning) are strong advocates of Bush curtailing his campaign schedule for other GOP candidates, while Republicans (54% campaign normally, 34% curtail campaigning) are strong advocates of Bush continuing as normal his campaigning for other candidates. Pollster John Zogby: “Bush’s popularity still remains enormous. But with only 51% saying Bush deserves reelection, Karl Rove is running a campaign as if a close election is ahead. There could be good reason for that strategy.”
