Competition, in the true spirit of the word and it's intent, is to measure ability between different parties on an even playing field.

Let's take a look at the "level playing field". If it's a field and it isn't level, then it's tilted giving one side an advantage. In time the disadvantaged side has to adapt to that condition and so becomes hardy and capable. Meanwhile the advantaged side becomes indolent and incapable because when you have advantages, you don't need to work as hard. Eventually, the disadvantage of having the unfavorable tilt of the playing field becomes an advantage.

Unfortunately, the field levelers go in there and tilt the field back in order to compensate what they see as inequity. They tilt the field back which helps the previously advantaged. The rich get richer.

The field levelers think they've done good and the press applauds them in their effort. The only problem is, they achieve the exact opposite of their intent. They don't care about what they really did, because what is important to the do-gooders is that they look good to themselves and to others. When you look good people give you things.
