I actually think they try to make sure they tell the truth but certain types of truth make better copy than others, they edit the truth. If the public is in the mood to hear about the excesses and greed of the rich and famous, the press will use those stories as opposed to the positive ones. Years ago everyone seemed to want to hear about how successful and hard working all these people were in being entrepreneurs because the mood of the country was that everyone could be successful and rich with a little luck and hard work. Now everyone wants to hear about how corrupt they all are. In both periods you could have found examples for both, but the press chooses what they think will make "good copy" depending on the mood of their audience. The reason I call it pandering is because they are basically telling people what the people want to hear, they aren't shaking any trees trying to find something that might question the current view.
