Elite Homes for the Poor

ASHGABAT (Reuters) - Turkmenistan's president-for-life Saparmurat Niyazov promised Tuesday to distribute to the needy some of the extravagant villas confiscated from corrupt officials during his latest purge.

Dozens of senior officials -- many of them from the powerful secret police and defense ministry -- have been sacked or jailed in an anti-corruption campaign which swept the desert Central Asian nation this spring.

Television said at the time many of those purged owned several spacious and lavish homes.

Tuesday television showed the long-serving president ordering his government to pass some 300 confiscated homes to the poor.

Niyazov, who has unlimited powers and has strewn vast monuments to himself across the impoverished country, has complained that even he lacked the luxury enjoyed by some officials supposed to live on modest wages.
