The point is that it doesn't matter if she is a danger to anyone. Yes, we may be lenient because of the strain of the situation with which had to deal, and we may additionally be merciful because she is emotionally exhausted and could despair if we are not careful. But we cannot let her off the hook too easily about what she did. One cannot too easily resume one's old life when one has committed murder, even with mitigating circumstances. One should be removed from society for a spell, to indicate the extent of disapproval, and one's unfitness to rejoin society without exacting a price for readmission.......
