Rep. Earl F. Hilliard, a five-term incumbent, lost to well-funded lawyer Artur Davis in a Democratic primary runoff yesterday in Alabama. Davis is heavily favored in November because he faces token opposition from a Libertarian candidate.

Very interesting outcome, because it was won on the Palestinian issue. This is a black district, both candidates black. Hilliard has opposed resolutions in the house supporting Israel, and went to the Arabs for campaign funds. Davis used this issue to get a lot of National Jewish money, and outspent Hillard, a long time incumbent, who had a good machine.

One take is that it means a political stance that is weak on Israel is going to be a tough one to sell to voters this year.
