I'm planning on building a 2000sf air conditioned dog house as well!<g>

Don't forget the new Mercedes for transporting the dog to the vet and the groomer.

Jeff if the dog is an employee and not an independent subcontractor (read strict IRS regulations regarding this matter) you could possibly deduct some expenses related to the dog. For example his food could be listed under entertainment and dining. The dog house might be deducted as office equipment provided said dog guards the copy machine at least 10 percent of his time. You may also be able to deduct the vet bills as equipment repairs or uncovered medical losses. If you claim the dog as an asset rather than an employee you would be able to depreciate the dog over a period of 7 years rather than 10....however if the dog gets hit by a car you may then be entitled to deduct the remainder of the cost of the dog in one shot..also as an equipment theft provided that the person who hit the dog takes off . If they stick around then it may also be an unreimbursed equipment loss.
If you build a 2000 sf a/c dog house you may only be able to deduct the sq footage that the dog uses exclusively for business, if the dog is treated as an employee. However if you treat the dog as an assest you could write the whole dog house off as equipment to store the other equipment in (kind of like writing off the computer case you put the computer in)
and no, if they don't ask don't refile.

also having the dog "fixed" may be deducted as equipment repair if the dog is treated as an asset

If you are a member of the Mafia, you can claim the dog as a security devise.

[hey, the IRS does not care if you are in any kind of illegal activity... if you have income, you owe taxes damned it ! -gg]

I'd just take the easy way out and retain that fine accounting firm of Addam, Cheatem and Howe....
I heard Bernie Ebbers swears by them, or was that AT them?
