In 1997, 75 percent said they believed in the death penalty and only 22 percent opposed it.
uaa.alaska.edu;

Public support for the death penalty drops to below 50 percent when voters are offered alternative sentences.

44% chose life w/o parole + restitution; 15% unsure; 41% choose the dp.

So, more people would support life without parole plus restitution to the victim's family than would choose the death penalty.

A 1995 Hart Research Poll of police chiefs in the U.S. found that the majority of the chiefs do not believe that the death penalty is an effective law enforcement tool. They place it last in a list of seven deterrents. I would like to put the millions of dollars now wasted on the death penalty into more effective crime-fighting tools.
