"drawing the people's attention away from the failures of those who rule them"...

Well said. I've been thinking about Rat's Rule of the Political Sciences (When all else fails, change the subject) in light of that totally stupid ruling on the Pledge. (And I am way left of center, so when I think it is stupid, either it is, or I am more to the center than I care to admit); but I digress.

This ruling was foisted upon us by Bush, Cheney, and Ashcroft, to divert our attention away from what is going on. Cheney thinks "ugh oh, they are at W and are getting ready to go thru the alphabet again. Hope they don't remember they were talking about Haliburton." Sez da shrub,
"they know they think they know that we knew what we said we didn't know". Sez Ashcroft, "I'll get the most ugh liberal court in the US to make an absurd ruling so we can forget to talk about your all problems".
