I think the big difference with sports is that you have a coach who is unquestionably the leader. I never played school sports though so I can't speak from experience there. However, I was in the military and rank resolves the same issue very well. I didn't have much of the group thing in college either, but that was a long time ago. I have had colleagues take design courses though that required group activity. My wife still goes to school, but those are business classes and they are just infested with groups. In the workplace you usually don't invite people you don't want to your meetings and if you're not wanted you probably won't be invited. On the other hand, student groups are haphazard by nature and prone to more problems.
