"Are you going to dump all of that in to the fire zone?" I was being waggish. However, if you want to be practical, there are plenty of tasks that are not in the heat or direct line of the fire. For large fires they build fire lines that are a day or two ahead of the fire. There are also lots of support efforts going on to help the evacuating residents. Like with everything else you screen the candidates so that prisoners who have something to gain by helping and who present minimal risks in the process. Then you create a structured environment (with chains and guards or whatever is called for). We already offer work release programs so this is not a huge jump.
