I think it is analogous to the point in the civil rights movement where it became declasse to use the n-word. That didn't change the minds of any racists but it make them hold their tongues in public, which improved the overall climate making it possible, over time, for a real change of heart. If I thought there were a snowball's chance in the proverbial place of winning this one right now, I would agree. But I think this one has to be won over time. It could be won in my lifetime if we play our cards right. I don't think making an issue over the Pledge at this point in time is a smart play. But I will be delighted if events prove me wrong.
