I started reading Louie Lamour when I was in the sixth grade. I love his books, but McMurtry is a better writer. His characters are broader and deeper. The bad guys are far worse than Lamour's bad guys, and the good guys are more believable.

There were two sequels to Lonesome Dove, neither of which fully rose to the standard it set. Considered on their own they are good movies, but no movie is better than Lonesome Dove, in my opinion. Robert Duvall will always be Gus, and Tommy Lee Jones will always be Call. My favorite character is Pea Eye. I've known guys like him. All the actors set the standard for the characters, and it is a hard act to beat indeed.

I found the book much more enjoyable after seeing the movie. I'll watch Lonesome Dove as long as I live.

As in my previous notes, the music is icing on the cake but could be taken by itself.
