That is a great post, OMD. I particularly like

What do we accomplish by requiring schoolchildren to recite words about some undefined "God" when the words (a) weren't even in the pledge to begin with until Congress passed a law adding them; (b) have nothing to do with patriotism or the flag; and (c) take what is intended to be a patriotic expression of loyalty to our nation and flag and tinge it with religious conflict.

Whatever Laz, our liberal leader, is paying you to post here, it's not enough!

This is the crux of the problem, IMO. Folks have patriotism and religion so entangled in their minds, as in the ubiquitous prayer and Anthem before every football game, that the non-religious are assumed unpatriotic. Adding that language to the Pledge a half century ago was all about that melding. It sealed the knee-jerk connection between God and country for those who started school after the Pledge was amended. Persuading folks who don't already know better that they're two different things is futile.
