Thurdsday. June 27, 2002

The U.S. Supreme Court today ruled that giving parents school vouchers to allow them to send their children to private or parochial schools is permitted under the Constitution.

In a 5-4 decision, the Court approved a voucher program in Cleveland, Ohio, that allows vouchers to be given to parents who then may choose which school they want their children to attend.

"We believe that the program challenged here is a program of true private choice," Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist wrote for himself and Justices Sandra Day O'Connor, Antonin Scalia, Anthony M. Kennedy and Clarence Thomas.
