In the final analysis, what helps the telecom operators most is the system that operates most efficiently.

This may indeed be the silver lining in the whole telecom/wireless debacle, forcing faster adoption of CDMA than might have happened otherwise. Bandwidth is not free or unlimited and cellular towers don't come for free. CDMA which enables more efficient use of bandwidth and wider coverage (fewer towers) for a given system loading are significant cost advantages that will not be lost on bottom lines...no matter what the politics say.
