Northeast US Heat Wave Pushes PJM Pwr Use To Record Levels
NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- The second heat wave to smother the Northeast U.S. this summer pushed power consumption in the Mid-Atlantic Tuesday to the highest levels ever seen in the region and threatened to boost demand even higher Wednesday.

PJM Interconnection LLC, which operates the power grid from Washington , D.C . to New Jersey , said demand for electricity reached 54,300 megawatts Wednesday afternoon, about 286 megawatts above the all-time record seen during a week- long heat wave last August. In utility Allegheny Power's western Pennsylvania service territory, which joined PJM this spring through an extension known as PJM West, power use peaked near 7,900 megawatts.

The region's grid operator said demand in PJM and PJM West could rise an additional 1,800 megawatts Wednesday to 64,000 megawatts.

The operator has projected adequate power supplies to meet this demand but is calling for conservation to help ensure it has enough generation to keep the lights on.
