Dave, For most of those folks, I mind the store for them. But if they really do not want to interact with their investments, I would look at a managed Global small cap fund (small caps outperform over a very long period) with a lesser amount allocated to some plug ugly balanced fund, ala Vanguard's Wellesley. I'd rather have somebody managing it because small caps have value added for managed money that cannot be found in large caps. I wouldn't want a random manager and I think they should spend as much time picking their managers as they do picking their doctors. If you asked me whether I'd rather opt for some local clinic or a random individual doctor, I'd opt for the local clinic where there are least some standards in place. But I'd really rather pick a doctor through recommendation and a tryout period.
