From Yahoo: As the market crashes and money flows out, Wall Street sorta feeds on itself to keep the game alive. In other words, they begin to sacrifice the limbs(the crap stocks) in order to save the torso(the index stocks). Eventually, they can't even save all the index stocks, so they begin to focus on the stronger ones to slow the bleeding in the indexes.

Look around...everything's crashing around us...stocks with 40% drops have become a daily occurance. However, for the most part, they're still making the indexes look good, so that when Joe Sixpack comes home and watches Tom Brokaw, things look okey dokey on the Dow.

Before we reach a final climatic end to this utter stupidity, you'll see most everything devastated, but the dow stocks still holding up...in the end, they'll crash too. Look at PG...a 40p/e for consumer goods....

The moral of the story...look for AMZN to get dumped big-time one day soon. They'll sacrifice it to save the ones they think they have a better chance of propping up.
