GV, you're suggestions are practical at first glance, but again you, as well as most politicians, are addressing long term problems with short term solutions. The long term problem is that the social security system is fundamentally flawed. Until we have a system that let's people take out what they put in plus a growth factor, then it will never be self-sustaining. The other thing is that we live in a capitalist nation, so to say that I shouldn't be allowed to take money out of a system I have contributed heavily is also fundamentally flawed. If I want to be charitable, I'll do it in my own way and a heck of a lot more efficiently than the government can. So let's separate charity from government. That's not a job they do well.
