When I was young, imprisonment was supposed to be about rehabilitation.
If you were tod that was all it was about, then someone was lying to you. It's also about deterrence. A lot of people don't steal because they don't want to do the time. A lot of people don't kill because they don't want an interview with the hangman. And victims and victims' relatives want revenge.

All of it gets into the mix.

It seems like, over time, the rehabilitation notion disappeared when it became clear that it wasn't working.

So, having abandoned that tack, I'm inquiring how you feel about rehabilitation.

Why would anyone be in favor of it if it doesn't work?

There's another matter involved: We're not talking petty theft or embezzlement here. We're talking MURDER. I think a very high price should be attached to the illegal taking of human life.
