<You believe in Greenspan, and I have faith in free markets, you in magic, and I in physics.>

Jay, I believe in Green$pan, free markets, physics and magic inasmuch as nearly everything these days seems like magic to users because things are too complex and based on esoteric arcanities unintelligible to all but the cognoscenti. None of these are contradictory.

I would add that QUALCOMM can and has breached the laws of physics by making CDMA work [according to a Stanford physics professor in the early 1990s who maintained that CDMA couldn't work in mobile phones because it would breach the laws of physics].

Aztecs were today given a taste of the whip - they defy Uncle Al and bet against the Fed and Uncle Sam at their peril.

Uncle Al's job is to maintain the US$ as the pre-eminent means of transaction on the planet, though not necessarily store of value [though those two are inseparable, at least in an transient sense]. Various competitors will attempt to usurp the $ King. My cyberspace challenge will be the Q-currency; victory will be mine after a decade or two of battle. The Euro is making a feeble attempt, but will never be more than a regional currency.

The Q is getting the infrastructure in place, everywhere on earth, building cyberspace bit by bit, ready for bite by byte into Uncle Al's log-based greenback though the greenback is now also pixelated and flowing through cyberspace, acting as a test medium for the real thing to come.

The Maginot Line is fortress America defending the Greenback. Armed guards at borders won't even see my encrypted Q pixels zinging through the aether on phragmented photons. They'll have binoculars and will grunt orders to each other that "The coast's clear in sector 1 - confirm clear in sector 7", even as the photons are traveling through their very bodies!

Such is the life of Neanderthals and Aztecs. The world moves on.

Hi Jay - my 2c on the numbers. One thing that everybody involved in the game should have a feel for is time and the dynamics of the game, caused by the flow of time.
Example 1:

25% - (foreign ownership of US assets). When this bare fact is quoted in time context, it is much more difficult to ignore its implications

1980 5%
1990 11%
2000 25%

Time coordinate brings in some colour into the situation - "it was 25% in 2000 and it's been doubling every 10 years". That's quite a different story as a mere 25%, static colorblind number.

Example 2: (just short and qualitative)

XYZ is down 80% from top ( ergo time to buy)
XYZ has been sliding down from top the last 6 months (any reason it would stop this weekend? ergo time to short)
