Because they want the rest of us to pay for the difference.

They can get everything they want EXCEPT the monetary benefits w/o marriage. So why do they insist on marriage anyway?

They can get everything they want ....
What they can't get is the right to live as a family. Many legal disputes involving custody and property and offspring are settled by kinship tests of which marriage tends to outweigh blood relationships. That's what it is really about, family.
