There are Hindu extremists, there are Muslim extremists. And peculiarly, these extremists do not care about the faiths of other folks even if the faith of these folks are the same as theirs. For example, we had Nathuram Godse, a Hindu extremist who assassinated Gandhi, a Hindu in a Hindu prayer meeting. Then we also had a Jewish extremist assassinate Rabin. So this tells us something in that these religious fanatics who are born from the religion itself by taking a skewed view of a religion forget about their religion totally. And in this category falls Osama. He is using religion to turn those budding young men in religious fanatics. About Saddam himself, I am not aware if he has ever raised the cry of Jihad at all. He is just a power hungry man who would kill anybody who opposed him, Muslim or not. Otherwise, how do you justify his killing "the father of his grandchildren" and making his daughter a widow. Total insult to the concept of a family. On the issue of Muslims, I have yet to experience the notion that all Muslims are bad and so also that Jews are bad. In my days of growing up in India, India was a Soviet bloc country and still it had the courage to go ahead and recognize Israel, establish diplomatic relations in spite of a heavy infusion af Arabic investments in India. And am I proud in that it stood by its principle that every country has a right to exist: whether it is India trying to establish itself as a free country from British colonial rule, or Israel whose Jewish citizens were and are still recovering from the holocaust had a right to a guarantee from such incidents in future and hence established Israel. And in the same vein, we need to extend that to Palestine. Some way has to be found. There will always be detractors such as the Hamas, the Islamic Jihad. But there challenge has to be met jointly. Hopefully, the Saudis, Egypt and Jordan along with the US and Russia and the EU will succeed. I salute the US in its efforts on the recent Indo-Pak situation. I was and so were many Pakistanis and Indians living in the US, at the prospect of a nuclear war in that region. There are crazies on both sides in there. But the fact remains that it took the genius of the Bush administration to control and contain that situation when Rumsfeld (the military man) went there instead of Powell (the diplomatic man). The US used its military might at the right time and in the right way to calm things down there. I hope the US does the same in the Israel/Palestenian conflict. I think all parties in that region are ready and willing to have US make the move. If all parties agree that Arafat should go then he should go. Is is also very crucial that Israel agree to all the terms including the 1967 borders which Bush has indicated also. You cannot have one thing without the other. Even if Arafat gets reelected, I think he can be contained by his Arab friends (Saudi etc.). The Saudi's themselves now have to come out against terrorism since one of their own citizen, Osama is hanging the "Sword of Damocles" over their heads. So it is to the credit of Osama bn Laden as well as the Israeli military operations that has provided the impetus to move towards a solution in there. Osama and IDF, strange bedfellows but none the less true. Both of them can claim victory for peace in that region by posturing for war. And you mentioned about posting on that thread. Sure, you are most welcome to post there and I do not intend to control that thread in a way that others have expressed. All I say is that we (all posters) not let that become personal attacks and the use of profanity such as "that hairy bitch", "Mohammed the rapist", "Roy the boy" etc. etc. If there are no opposing views expressed then there is no need for anyone of us to come here on these threads and exchange our views.
