Searle, what I don't understand is why everyone else tariffs the US with abandon and when the US tariffs in reply all of a sudden we are the evil cohorts of Satan. Probably Blair is doing this all for home consumption though and there is no rift at all.

I once heard it said that the US runs Britain because they are one of the few dependable allies we have as far as dependability goes. But it is more likely that England has a heand in running the US. I think they still see us as a colony of sorts and I'm sure they have a lot of big investments here.

Overall, I am pretty much isolationist. There aren't any real friends out there anyway so why pretend. What I do want to see continue is open, friendly boarders for tourists (and relief organizations). Afterall, it is one of the few simple pleasures that hasn't been mucked up by all the wars of the last century.

As for Israel, I almost think the US should continue to support them just to piss off the rest of the ingrate world. I'm getting tired of the US being blamed for the inadequacy of other governments that squander their own people's opportunities for prosperity through war, dogma, and lack of freedom (and I do include Israel on that list of inadequate governments).
